Vision and Mission

Vision (what we aspire to do)
Jayhawk Academic Advising (JAA) aspires to provide transformational advising that supports and enhances each student’s learning experiences.
Mission (what we do to move toward our vision)
- JAA maintains strong student relationships, connecting with students early and guaranteeing personalized advisor access. We support students proactively and seamlessly from their entry to KU through engagement with the world upon graduation.
- We clearly delineate student and advisor responsibilities, mentoring and teaching students as they fulfill tasks, clarify their values, set goals, and make meaning of their educational experiences.
- We connect students with resources: information that is accurate and timely and campus resource partners with expertise to address specific student needs.
Our Values (what characterizes our work)
We espouse the values of our Academic Success division, so our work is characterized by continuous improvement, resolving system problems affecting students. We value vibrant collaboration with campus partners. We initiate proactive practice that identifies and anticipates student needs, all the while building an open community. Our work expresses the National Academic Advising Association Core Values of respect, professionalism, empowerment, integrity, commitment, and caring. We embrace the five values of IRISE, KU’s culture charter for being an exceptional learning community: integrity, respect, innovation, stewardship, and excellence.
Student Advising Learning Outcomes (what we teach in advising)
Through effective advising over time students should be able to:
- Create a coherent and meaningful plan with academic, co-curricular and career interests that are representative of their values, interests, abilities, and life goals.
- Understand the requirements for timely completion of their degree.
- Identify and use campus resources to help them advance in their educational plan.
- Demonstrate effective use of systems and tools to navigate university policies and procedures when needed.
- Develop a relationship with their advisors and meet with them at least twice a year, preferably twice per semester minimum or through other meaningful communication channels.
- Foster resilience, autonomy, accountability, and curiosity to spur life-long learning.
- Build an open community network and articulate their role in the KU community and KU’s role in their growth as a student.
- Lead by facilitating and belonging to sustainable, healthy communities.
These learning outcomes, in conjunction with KU’s Institutional Learning Goals, provide a path to academic success.
